Every day we face a paradox: we have never had so much access to creative and highly sensory expressions, while at the same time we have never been so saturated with stimuli and noise, and yet we experience a feeling of emptiness. There is an abundance of stimuli, but a lack of meaning.
Art has always been a field for processing human suffering, and today it finds itself strained by new forms of unease: hyperconnectivity, algorithmic logic, the continuous performance of the self, and the difficulty of sustaining profound experiences. But how to maintain sanity in a time that has no time for processing?
This course proposes to investigate the numerous relationships between art and mental health throughout history and in the present day, analyzing different artistic manifestations as devices for projection, displacement, and subjective transformation, based on an interplay between psychoanalysis, philosophy, and new theories of culture.
