Although modern Brazilian painting has been widely studied in courses, books and exhibitions, sculpture still receives little attention. There are few publications and courses dedicated to the history of sculpture in Brazil. This course seeks to expand knowledge on the subject, presenting an overview of Brazilian three-dimensional production throughout the 20th century, with incursions also into contemporary works.
The course will cover figurative and abstract sculptures, considering dialogues with international art and its relationships with society. Aimed at the general public, the course serves both as an introduction to the subject and as a deepening for those who are already familiar with the subject. During the meetings, works by renowned artists and lesser-known names will be discussed, with special attention to the production of women and the collection of the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo.
Agenda
Class 02 – From figuration to abstraction (1940s to 1970s)
- We will briefly introduce traditional sculpture techniques (clay modeling, plaster and bronze casting) and discuss how some modern artists alter these techniques to produce artistic experiments. The rest of the class will be dedicated to the works of Maria Martins, Felícia Leirner and Liuba Wolf and their direction towards abstract artistic solutions.
Class 03 – Brazilian constructivism in sculpture (1950s to 1970s)
- The class deals with the abstract constructive movements that gained recognition mainly in the 1960s. The trajectories and three-dimensional works of Lygia Clark, Mary Vieira, Zélia Salgado, Amilcar de Castro, Franz Weissmann and Sérgio Camargo will be addressed.
Class 04 – Sculpture in the expanded field and the Panorama of Current Brazilian Art exhibitions (1970s and 1980s)
- In this class we will discuss Rosalind Krauss's concept of “sculpture in the expanded field” and how it can be useful for understanding the production of women who presented three-dimensional works in the “Panoramas of current Brazilian art” exhibitions that took place at MAM in the 1970s and 1980s.
Class 05 – Three-dimensionality in contemporary art and its connections with popular culture
- Reflection on different contemporary three-dimensional productions that seek to dialogue with religious and artisanal practices, with a focus on the works of Celeida Tostes, Ernesto Neto and Rubem Valentim.
