A practical and straightforward course for communicators and professionals who write about art. Throughout the classes, topics such as press releases, criticism, essays, market texts (reports, auction catalogs) and institutional texts will be covered. It proposes writing exercises, methods to overcome writer's block, research organization and editing, and, at the end, each participant will be invited to produce a text based on a visit to an exhibition.

Lesson 1 – What is the content of an art text?
- Importance and use of texts in the field of Arts.
- Texts that provide information (press releases, wall text, weekly guides)
- Texts that provide evaluation (critical and theoretical texts, books on Art History)
Lesson 2 – What are the types of text and what are they used for?
- Texts with content for those seeking art as entertainment, leisure, and culture: press releases, captions for artworks in the exhibition, weekly guide, and newspaper articles.
- Texts with content for those seeking art as a lifestyle, culture, and intellectual knowledge: catalogs, reviews, and books on art theory.
- Personal preferences and individual needs. How each member of the group uses writing about Contemporary Art.
Lesson 3 – Texts for the market and texts for those who use art as raw material.
- Texts for the market: trade fair reports, market research, newspaper articles, and auction catalogs.
- Texts for those who use art as raw material, as well as for artists and students: articles, institutional exhibition catalogs, books on art theory and history.
- Preparing to write a text
Lesson 4 – Writing about a work of art
- Describe a work of art
- Relationships that give cultural value and relevance to the work of art.
- Documents and texts that accompany a work of art (certificate of authenticity, technical data sheet, expert report, critique and history)
Lesson 5 – The text and the context: a visit to the exhibition
- Reading institutional texts (wall, catalog, brochure): identifying mediation strategies.
- Confrontation between text and direct experience of the work.
- Writing in context: experiencing reading about the exhibition after the visit, relating individual perspectives to debates in contemporary art.
Lesson 6 – Interview and research
- Interview as a strategy for press release and catalog text.
- How to conduct research, and when is it useful or necessary?
- Career: a brief overview of networking and portfolio building.
Lesson 7 – Text Structure
- The basic structure of a text to avoid getting lost along the way and to avoid becoming overwhelmed, thus avoiding straying from the path.
