The introductory course to conservation and restoration of paintings offers a comprehensive overview of the universe of preservation of our cultural heritage over the course of 8 classes. Through dynamic classes and case studies, students will be introduced to the fascinating and complex work of the Conservator/Restorer. This multidisciplinary profession requires knowledge in different areas of science, such as Chemistry, Physics, Mechanics and Art History.

The aim of the course is not to train professionals, but rather to provide a deeper understanding of this exciting and often little-known profession, as well as to discuss conservation and restoration processes. Participants will learn to develop a critical eye when examining works of art, identifying intrinsic and extrinsic problems. In addition, the behind-the-scenes of an exhibition and the fundamental role of the conservation professional will be covered.

This course is aimed at anyone interested in exploring the fascinating world of professionals involved in preserving our cultural heritage.

Raul Machado Carvalho Junior

Raul Carvalho is a Conservator and Restorer of Works of Art, graduated from the Instituto Paulista de Restauro, with several improvement and specialization courses in Brazil and abroad, in addition to having a master's degree from the Centro Universitário Belas Artes de São Paulo. He worked at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo and at the Museu Afro Brasil. He is currently the owner of Atelier Raul Carvalho Conservação e Restauro de Obras de Arte, where he leads a team of restorers and carries out projects both in Brazil and in several countries around the world.
