The introductory course on the conservation and restoration of paintings offers, over 8 classes, an overview of the world of cultural heritage preservation. Through case studies, students will be introduced to the work of the conservator and restorer, a multidisciplinary profession that requires knowledge in various areas of science, such as Chemistry, Physics, Mechanics, and Art History.

The course aims not to train professionals, but to provide a deeper understanding of this fascinating – and often little-known – profession, as well as to discuss conservation and restoration processes. Participants will learn to develop a critical eye when examining works of art, identifying intrinsic and extrinsic problems. Furthermore, the behind-the-scenes aspects of an exhibition and the fundamental role of the conservation professional will be covered.
