The term “artist’s writing” does not constitute a literary or discursive genre, as it encompasses various forms: letter, treatise, manifesto, criticism, aphorism, essay, fiction. However, in general, this text expresses the ideas that permeate the creation of its author’s work.
From the 1960s onwards, particularly, artists' writing began to not only systematize the thoughts of the work of art in words, but also became part of or became the work itself. Other times, the text took the form of a short story, poem or novel, with a greater or lesser connection to the work of visual art.
The course then considers these various possibilities of writing, by selecting for analysis a set of texts by Brazilian artists, published from the mid-20th century onwards, in order to establish a field of thought on contemporary production in which aspects of literature, philosophy and politics converge, together with notions from the disciplines of theory, history and art criticism.
