Since its founding, the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo (MAM-SP) has had a history that is intertwined with the trajectory of its collection. The transition from a biennial museum to the current museum marked a key moment: the “loss” of the original collection, now housed at MAC-USP. This change had a direct impact on the museum’s activities and exhibitions, and on the formation of a contemporary art collection.
Most of the current collection was created between the 1990s and 2000s, representing almost 50% of the more than 5 items in the collection. This collection is constantly revised and expanded, consolidating MAM as a unique space for debates on what constitutes modern and contemporary Brazilian art.
The course aims to disseminate debate about the history of MAM-SP and the study of its collection, reflecting on the formation of its collection and its role as a privileged space for reviews and reflections on contemporary art. Aimed at students and those interested in art in general, the course seeks to understand the Museum and its collection in the context of contemporary artistic production, with an emphasis on Panorama of Brazilian Art, carried out since 1969 as a central milestone of its work.
