The course aims to present a brief outline of the main concepts that define an independent or autonomous space, as well as its location in the History of Art, and then explore the ways of working with curatorship in these contexts. Understanding curatorial thinking and practice beyond exhibitions and in dialogue with the particularities of independent spaces, the course will also address curatorship in the context of artistic residencies, courses, public programs and specific projects.
The course will have three online classes and one in-person class.
Agenda
Class 01 (online) – Theoretical introduction to curation in independent spaces
- Presentation of content and bibliography
- A brief overview of independent spaces in the History of Art
- A survey of the main symptoms of curation in independent spaces
Class 02 (in person) – Visit to independent spaces
- Group presentation
- Tour of 8 independent spaces located in the west zone of SP
- On-site assessment and argumentation of the main symptoms of curation in independent spaces
- Disclosure of the curatorial exercise to be carried out at home
Class 03 (online) – From theory to practice I
- Sharing a case study
- Presentation, argumentation and discussion of the exercises carried out by the participants (10 min for each, with up to 5 slides)
Class 04 (online) – From theory to practice II
- Sharing a case study
- Presentation, argumentation and discussion of the exercises carried out by the participants (10 min for each, with up to 5 slides)
- Final impressions
