The course aims to introduce participants to the functioning of the basic information cycle related to museum collections. In other words, the proposal is to discuss the two main areas of processing museum collections: documentation and online data sharing, through digital catalogs and GLAM Wiki projects, for example.

The documentation part of the course seeks to present basic notions of the three types of standards necessary for good collection management: terminology, procedures and data structure. It also seeks to reinforce the role of the collection management policy in bringing together or articulating all these standards in the institution's day-to-day operations. In this context, it is also expected to discuss, albeit preliminarily, contemporary issues that are still very little addressed in the context of documentation, such as the issue of language. This is because when an object is named or titled, it is possible to shed different lights or interpretations on it, making it always subject to subsequent review and adjustments in a more socially fair, diverse and equitable perspective.

The part of the course related to sharing museum collections online explores different ways of making objects known globally. This includes the use of traditional online catalogs and GLAM Wiki projects, collaborative initiatives between memory institutions and the community that contributes to Wikipedia, and related projects such as Wikimedia Commons. Crucial points for sharing collections on the web and on Wikipedia will also be discussed, such as the issue of copyright and the use of Creative Commons licenses.
