This course starts from a review of the historiography on Brazilian art in the 1980s, proposing a sociological perspective for analyzing the narrative developed around the notion of generation, as well as its implications in terms of centralization and erasure.

Addressing visual arts exhibitions held in Brazil between the late 1970s and 1980s, the course discusses the main transformations in the conditions of production, mediation and circulation of art in the country, considering its relationship with institutions (museums, universities, cultural centers, biennials and art shows), the press and the art market. It also proposes to unravel events and aspects that reveal the complexity and diversity of cultural manifestations of the period, opposing views that portray this moment in Brazilian history as a “lost decade”, thus demonstrating the importance and need to revisit the period.

In particular, the role of artists and institutions of the 1980s in the consolidation of Brazilian contemporary art is highlighted, including the emergence of exhibition curation, the consolidation of art courses, the formation of a market network for contemporary art, and the creation of cultural policies focused on the visual arts. Taking the Panoramas of the São Paulo Museum of Art in the 1980s, the aim is to discuss the coexistence between generations of artists and aspects of the national scene, while the case of Brazilian participation in the exhibition Earth Magicians, held in Paris in 1989, is analyzed to consider the projection of Brazilian art on the international scene, as well as the paths that opened up for the following decade.
