Six years after the founder of MAM São Paulo Ciccillo Matarazzo transferred all the works in the collection to the University of São Paulo, the museum created the Panorama of Brazilian Art with the aim of creating a new collection.
Since 1969, Panorama has surpassed its initial mission. This collection (around 5.400 works) has grown to the point that MAM is unable to give it permanent visibility due to the limitations of the pavilion where it is installed below the marquee designed by Oscar Niemeyer.
The theme of this edition takes as its starting point the lack of a headquarters built specifically to house MAM São Paulo and invites, in addition to artists, architects to think about where this building could be located (inside or outside the park) and what the vocation of this building would be. program.
The Panorama's title, Unique Forms of Continuity in Space, was borrowed from the sculpture by futurist artist Umberto Boccioni, whose piece once belonged to the museum and is now one hundred years old. Today at MAC USP, this work highlights the speculative nature of the present exhibition.
Along with historical documents that elucidate the trajectory of MAM, such as those referring to the exhibition Bahia no Ibirapuera (1959) by Lina Bo Bardi and Martim Gonçalves, Panorama highlights other contexts of modernity in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, Pernambuco, Belo Horizonte and Brasília) and around the world.
The expographic design restores access to the museum located in front of the Biennale building, as well as the colors of the door and walls, and eliminates the presence of perpendicular panels that divide the space into small rooms.
The reality is now different, as the projects from architectural firms point out: if the IV Centenary of São Paulo gained Ibirapuera Park in 1954, how can we imagine a gift suited to the spirit of a V Centenary?
