Panorama of the Panoramas
of Panoramas (2008)
The Panorama of Brazilian Art is today one of the most traditional exhibitions in the country. Its first edition took place in 1969, on the occasion of the reopening of MAM. After having remained closed for around seven years, when its collection was transferred to the University of São Paulo, the museum created with this exhibition the possibility of forming a new collection through awards and donations from the artists who participated in its editions.
When presenting around one hundred works that entered the MAM collection thanks to Panorama, it is clear how specific the criteria were in their times, highlighting the transformations in the analytical instruments of art history in the last four decades. What was considered a great work in 1969, today its value is not properly recognized.
Many of the works on display are being presented for the first time after entering the collection. One can speculate about the possible reasons why some works are relegated to remaining in storage. The physical space of the museum does not allow for a permanent exhibition of the collection, for example. Or perhaps there is a lack of connection between a specific work and the collection policy that makes up the current collection.
In this sense, the exhibition could become an instrument to place names that are unknown today and renowned in the same history of art. History that, far from the vast majority of the public, does not truly open up to an understanding of its criteria for inclusion and exclusion of what is considered art or not, what works are good or bad and whether they are representative or not of a time.
