O Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo It has been closed to the public since August 2024, due to the historic and long-awaited renovation of the Marquise. Ibirapuera park, inaugurated on January 24, 2026.

The MAM (Museum of Modern Art) was directly impacted by the structural interventions in the Marquise and, given this context, opted to carry out not only specific adjustments, but a significant physical reorganization of its spaces.

During the closure period, the Museum is promoting the requalification of spaces dedicated to welcoming, accessibility, education, and social interaction, focusing on improving the public experience. The following are being updated: the reception area, with improvements to flow and welcoming atmosphere; the auditorium, with technical and structural improvements; and the atelier of... Educational and the courses, strengthening the Museum's educational activities; and the Library, with improvements in its infrastructure and organization.

The interventions engage with contemporary principles of museology, prioritizing accessibility, functionality, and enhancing the institutional experience, without altering the configuration of the exhibition rooms.

The exhibition rooms will not undergo significant structural changes. The Museum's proposal does not involve architectural changes to the galleries, but rather the improvement of areas for welcoming, training, and supporting the public.

However, the MAM will feature a new lighting design and an upgraded air conditioning system, both in line with current museum standards. In this way, the Museum preserves the integrity of its exhibition spaces, avoiding interventions that alter its original configuration.

No. All interventions fully respect the architectural design of the Marquise, as well as the exhibition design of the MAM. There will be no modifications to the exhibition rooms, nor structural changes that alter the original conception of the space.

The MAM projects were approved by the relevant preservation bodies — CONPRESP, CONDEPHAAT and IPHAN —, ensuring that the adaptations are aligned with the guidelines for the preservation of historical and architectural heritage.

Both. The Ibirapuera Park marquee underwent a structural renovation under the responsibility of the São Paulo City Hall, executed by Construcap, an engineering company contracted by the public authorities.

Because of its location in the Marquise, the MAM was directly impacted by the interventions and had its headquarters closed from August 2024. After the inauguration of the new Marquise, on January 24, 2026, the Museum began its own internal renovation.

No. However, the internal renovations carried out by MAM have the support of the São Paulo City Hall, through the Municipal Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy, which is transferring R$ 10 million to the Museum to enable the updating of the spaces. MAM was also awarded a grant from ProAC to renovate the Library and the Educational workshop. The remaining resources come from the Museum's own funds.

The resources are being allocated to the refurbishment of the reception area, auditorium, education studio, library, storage area, and all public access areas of the Museum, ensuring structural and technical improvements aligned with heritage preservation guidelines, contemporary accessibility demands, and international museum operating standards.

No. The interventions are restricted to the internal areas of the MAM building and there will be no expansion of the built area. The external technical areas will receive a landscaping project, developed with respect for the species already existing in the Park. All intervention projects — including the construction site plan — were submitted to the Municipal Secretariat of Green Areas and Environment, whose team is monitoring the execution of the renovation.

The MAM (Museum of Modern Art) is scheduled to reopen in July 2026. The reopening will mark the completion of the renovation works and the resumption of in-person activities at its headquarters in the Marquise of Ibirapuera Park.

During the period of renovation of the marquee, the MAM maintains its in-person programming with the support of partner institutions and reinforces its presence in different cultural spaces.
