Projeto Parede | Crepe Garden

Esta obra de Gustavo Rezende multiplica personagens em situação de vigilância e de confronto físico. Dentre as figuras, repete-se com frequência a silhueta do próprio artista. Ele tem trabalhado o autorretrato ao longo de sua produção, colocando-se em diferentes contextos. Neste friso projetado para o Projeto Parede, a referência a si mesmo é acrescida de outros sujeitos, criando-se uma sequência de homens assemelhados, mas que se distinguem claramente pela posição de vigilante, de agressor ou de vítima. Para enfatizar a diferença de poder entre as partes, surgem também cavalos que colocam os vigilantes em posição superior. O conjunto se organiza como uma paisagem, com grupos distribuídos de forma irregular, criando alturas diversas que representam elementos mais à frente ou mais distantes; mas, a cor neutra de fundo e a ausência de relevo ou de vegetação impedem que identifiquemos o local da ação: afinal se trata de um festival, de uma batalha campal, ou de uma manifestação?

Por um lado, a repetição de personagens sem rosto definido sugere que os diferentes papéis no confronto violento são lados diversos da mesma pessoa: o vigilante, o repressor e a vítima estão todos dentro de nós. Por outro lado, essa repetição indica uma distribuição homogênea de tais posturas na sociedade: vivemos de tal modo imersos em violência, que já não diferenciamos mais os lados em conflito. Como elemento unificador, Gustavo Rezende utiliza a fita crepe, que cria uma textura e uma cor únicas para toda a composição, ao mesmo tempo em que anula os detalhes das feições e tira a individualidade dos personagens.

This work by Gustavo Rezende multiplies characters in a state of vigilance and physical confrontation. The silhouette of the artist himself frequently recurs among the figures. He has worked on the self-portrait throughout his production, placing it in different contexts. In this frieze designed for the Projeto Parede [Wall Project], the reference to himself is reinforced by other subjects, creating a sequence of similar men, but who are clearly distinguished by their status as watchman, aggressor or victim. To emphasize the difference in the power of the parties, horses also appear which place the watchmen on a higher level. The whole is arranged as a landscape, with groups distributed irregularly, creating different heights which represent closer or more distant elements; but the neutral color of the background and the lack of relief or vegetation prevents us from identifying the location of the action: in the end, is this a festival, a battlefield or a protest?

On the one hand, the repetition of characters without clearly defined faces suggests that the different roles in the violent confrontation are different aspects of the same person: the watchman, the repressor and the victim are all contained within us. On the other hand, this repetition suggests a homogenous distribution of these positions in society: we live so immersed in violence that we can no longer differentiate the sides of the conflict. As a unifying element, Gustavo Rezende uses crepe tape, which creates a single texture and color for the whole composition, at the same time as it obliterates the details of the features and nullifies the individuality of the characters.
