The nine tactile interpretations featured in Look and See are part of the MAM Education Department’s accessibility resources, developed from artworks in MAM São Paulo’s permanent collection. Conceived by artist and researcher Marina Baffini in collaboration with Ateliê Inclua-me, the pieces offer tactile ways of engaging with works from Brazilian modern and contemporary art, spanning different periods, media, and supports.
Functioning as sensory translations of the original works, these interpretations were created based on the principles of an intersemiotic system developed by the artist. Each piece involves choices regarding scale, relief, texture, temperature, density, and materiality, transforming visual elements into tactile experiences that can be perceived and interpreted through touch. Fabrics, raised and smooth surfaces, three-dimensional structures, and synthetic or organic components are used to evoke composition, depth, gesture, rhythm, contrast, and spatial relationships of the original items.
